Tanulmányok - Szilárdfy Zoltán: Krisztus hitelesnek tartott profilja a művészetben
ARRABONA 2012. 50/1. TANULMÁNYOK CHRIST’S AUTHENTIC HELD PROFILE IN THE ART In memory of Dr. László Vanyó international patrologic scholar and artist who was born 70 years ago The representation of Christ’s face is based on legends. From among the Christ images that are held authentic this study treats only the Saviour profile. This image, based on the description of the apocryphal Letter of Lentulus, appeared in every genre of art in the late medieval ages from the graphics and paintings to the goldsmiths and coin art and it even appears on the elaborately decorated leather covers of the Renaissance book binders. The manifold tradition and diverse variations of the so called emerald medal are demonstrated by the numerous numismatic examples. An interesting interaction developed between the graphics that appeared from the 16* century and the coins. A crown of the Christ profile representations of the different genres in the Manierist and Baroque centuries is the bronze bust of Christ by Antonio Abondio (Riva, 1538 - Vienna, 1591) showing the portrait of the Saviour of the World en face, which has been held authentic from 5 hundred years. From the cited example it can be seen that the popularity of the Christ profile, based on the authentic-held description of the Letter of Lentulus, prevailed in the Christian art from the 15th to the 20th century, together with its cult and monographic influence.
