“Bacon makes nice smell”

HUNGARIAN SONGS FROM THE DOCUMENTS OF JÁNOS SZTANKOVICS, A BISHOP OF GYŐR

This brief source publication sets forth six Hungarian songs from the document legacy of János Sztankovics, a Bishop of Győr (1781-1848). Neither the verses nor the papers carrying them provide evidence for the dating of the manuscripts, as they also keep silence of the apropos of their taking down. János Sztankovics’ biography has not been studied yet, although whenever he was referred to, he was mentioned as a generous Maecenas of the culture - especially of the musical life.

The compilation of handwritten songbooks had a long tradition and it was pursued even in the first half of the 19th century. However, by this time the purposeful, scientifically based research of the folklore had also appeared serving the ideals about the nation and people of the Romantic generation. From the end of the 18th century scientific societies and newspaper editors published several calls to urge for collecting folklore materials initiating a nation-wide collection movement. Sztankovics’ collection may possibly belong to this category.

Of the six presently published songs five appears in other collections - although in other text variations, while the identification of the sixth song will be the task of further researches.
