Tóth Endre: Die ara Augustorum von Pannonien und Pannonia Superior

ARRABONA 2011.49/1. TANULMÁNYOK THE ARA AUGUSTORUM IN AND IN PANNONIA AND IN PANNONIA SUPERIOR According to Th. Mommsen Savaria had been the centre of the provincial cult in Provincia Pannonia Superior. This fact could be established by Roman inscriptions excavated in Szombathely town, having founded and erected over the ruins of Savaria. The archaeological finds, the epigraphic evidence made it possible to outline the town-planning of the colonia having been founded by Emperor Claudius. The place of the Forum Provinciae, where once the institutes of the provincial cult had been erected, could have been determined too. It had been westward from the colonia itself, on a relatively large territory (500x300 m.) The epigraphic and sacral relics connected with the provincial cult got to the surface just there. The theatre had been on the western perimeter of the square. Eastward it was bordered by the Savarias rivulet, and a bridge connected the square with the colonia. An inscription proves that the bridge had been built in 82 A. D. So, the institutes of the provincial cult, the provincial council of Pannonia (later of Pannonia Superior) had been erected neither in a military settlement, nor in the colonia itself. The period of its erection must have been in the first comprehensive civic design period of the province, under the Flavians. Endre Tóth
