KISS JÓZSEF AND THE DESCRIPTION OF THE HILLS OF GYŐR COUNTY

Kiss József (cc.1775-1841) Lutheran Pastor started his studies in Győr and continued them in Sopron at the Lutheran Grammar School. Later he became a Pastor in Nagybaráti (today: Győrújbarát). His poems were published in the Szépliteratúrai Ajándék and the Koszorú. His article about his homeland the Sokoró Hills and the viticulture of the Pannonhalma Hills was published in the Felső-Magyarországi Minerva in 1826 under the tide “The Hills of Győr County”. He reported about the geographical features: ravines and “breathtakingly deep gorges” cut by the rainwater, inhabited vine-hills, different varieties of grapes, national costumes, nationalities, tillage and services as well as marriage customs. His report can be a rich source of information for both ethnographers and historians.
