ARRABONA 2010. 48/1. TANULMÁNYOK WRITTEN DATA IN CONNECTION WITH THE BAGPIPE TRADITION IN THE MATERIAL OF THE FOLKLORE RESEARCH OF SZOMJAS-SCHIFFERT GYÖRGY IN CSALLÓKÖZ This paper aims at discussing the segment of the material of Szomjas-Schiffert György’s folklore research in Csallóköz which is not musical data, but belongs to the so called “bagpipe tradition”. The bagpipe tradition comprises the complete musical tradition in connection with the bagpipe (instrumental and vocal music) as well as all the other traditions of the different branches of the popular culture which refer to the bagpipe (bagpipe making, popular beliefs and customs, etc.). As the presented data appear in written form in the collected folklore material, and contain no musical data they can be considered written data. In addition to Bartók Béla’s and Ág Tibor’ work in this field Szomjas-Schifffert György’s folk musical research in the Csallóköz region is one of the most important. It follows from the fact that during 10 years he did systematic research in 86 villages which resulted in 2000 pieces of recorded data. Szomjas-Schiffert György put the musical phenomena in their most far-reaching interconnection and he also collected data in written form. This latter, less known segment of his research is also extremely interesting and valuable. Iván Nagy 44
