ARRABONA 2010. 48/ 1. TANULMÁNYOK “HERE IS THE DAY THAT WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR...” Children in the festive day customs in the Northern Balaton Region In the villages of the Northern Balaton Region (Balaton-felvidék) the customs performed by children were connected with characteristic folklore pieces from the second half of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. These folklore pieces, which were inherent part of the ritual customs, were either sung or simply recited. Each custom performed by children was connected with the festive days between Advent and Corpus Christy, i.e. St. Lucy’s Day, Christmas, Holy Innocents’ Day, New Year’s Day, Epiphany, Carnival, Good Friday, Easter, Pentecost and Corpus Christy. The customs were performed partly by schoolboys and partly by schoolgirls between the age of 8-15. This set of customs can be considered as a special part of the children’s society. They helped children learn the customs of the community and offered them opportunity to observe, collect pieces of information and learn behaviour patterns. The customs performed by children were partly analogical health and fertility magical practices and partly festival salutation songs or recitals connected with present collection. Emőke S.
