TANULMÁNYOK DUAL GRAVES IN THE AVAR CEMETERY OF VASASSZONYFA Contribution to Péter Tomka's findings Based on the documentation there are 6 graves out of the 8 opened up dual graves in the Avar cemetery of Vasasszonyfa with a total grave number of a thousand which are suitable for the thorough analyses. According to the position of the corpses that always lay in pair in each coffin, these graves can be divided into two groups: 1.) 4 graves where the corpses lay in the same direction with the main person situated left to the subordinate one; 2.) 2 graves where the corpses lay opposite direction with the subordinate person situated at the left leg of the main person. Chronologically there are also two groups: 1.) MA II. - SPA I. Period: 3 graves; 2.) SPA III.: 3 graves. When considering the causes of such burials it can be suggested that while the reason of the first instance might have been some local event, the second group of graves can be traced back to an event which shattered the whole Avaria, namely to the Avar civil war and its fatal consequences. The dual graves, which represent about 1,5% of a total of 500 documented and analysable graves, fit well into the known tradition of the ethno-cultural group having been characterised by even sharper contours in the area of North-Western Pannónia. Gábor Kiss DOPPELGRABER DES AWARISCHEN FRIEDHOFES IN VASASSZONYFA Daten zur Sammlung von Péter Tomka Von den erschlossenen 8 Doppelgräbern, die man im tausend Gräber umfassenden Friedhof aus der Awarenzeit in Vasasszonyfai fand, sind anhand der Dokumentationen 6 für eine eingehende Analyse geeignet. Wegen der Anordnung der darin liegenden Toten können diese stets in 2 Gruppen unterteilt werden: 1.) in gleicher Richtung liegende Tote, die Hauptperson des Begräbnisses an der linken Seite der Nebenperson - 4 Fälle; 2.) in entgegengesetzter Richtung liegende Tote, die Hauptperson beim linken Fuß der Nebenperson des Begräbnisses - 2 Fälle. Chronologisch gesehen kann man ebenfalls 2 Gruppen unterscheiden: 1.) die Periode MA II - SPA I - 3 Fälle, 2.) die Periode SPA III - 3 Fälle. Während von den beiden Geschehnissen, die derartige Begräbnisse zur Folge hatte, nur das erste lokale Auswirkungen hatte, gilt das zweite bereits für das gesamte Gebiet Awaria, war ein Ereignis mit allgemeinen Auswirkungen, namentlich der awarische Bürgerkrieg und dessen verhängnisvolle Folgen. Die ungefähr 1,5% ausmachenden Doppelgräber der etwa 500 dokumentierten und rekonstruierten Gräber des Friedhofes fügen sich gut ein in die auch bisher bekannten Traditionen der sich im Gebiet Nordwestpannoniens immer mehr skizzierenden ethnokulturellen Volksgruppe.
