TANULMÁNYOK YEAR BY YEAR PAGES IN THE LIFE OF FINE ARTS OF GYŐR I 1896-1900 In the second half of the 19 th century, due to the unfavourable circumstances, the city of Győr lost its former economic and cultural influence. The city - owing to the flexibility and competency of the administrative board, not to a small degree - started development again at the end of the century, and this prosperity influenced the intellectual formation of the city, as well. The present paper, which opens a longer series of studies, is making an attempt at tracing year by year - from 1896, the turning point of the millennium in the history of the country and the city the formation of the life of fine arts of Győr, casting light upon those events of more importance, which contributed to the changes that has made the city again one of the most significant centres of culture in the country since the beginning of the 20 th century. Jahrhunderts verlor die Stadt Győr (Raab) infolge ungünstiger Umstände ihren alten wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Einfluss. Die Stadt begann sich - in nicht unerheblichem Maß dank der Flexibilität und Sachkenntnis der Stadtführung - zum Ende des Jahrhunderts erneut zu entwickeln, und diese Prosperität wirkte sich auch auf das geistige Leben des Ortes aus. Die vorliegende Schrift, die als Einführung einer längeren Studie dient, unternimmt den Versuch, die Entwicklung des künstlerischen Lebens der Stadt Győr, speziell das der Bildenden Kunst von 1896 an zu begleiten, beginnend von dem einen Wendepunkt in der Geschichte des Landes und der Stadt darstellenden Millennium an, von Jahr zu Jahr schreitend, hierbei jene wesentlichen Ereignisse erwähnend, die dazu beitrugen, dass die Stadt von Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts an erneut zu einem der bedeutendsten Kulturzentren in der Provinz werden konnte. Almási Tibor 302
