TANULMÁNYOK Dr. Jenő Czigány: Data in Connection with Symbolic Trepanation The author recites in details the cranium of a 18-20-year-old woman found in the grave no. 1 m2 in the cemetery of the Arpadian Age - lOth-llth century - in Lébény-Kaszásdomb. The cranium is characterised by symbolic trepanation. Prior to this, a female cranium with real trepanation was found in grave no. 44 of the same cemetery. The detailed anthropological examination of the cranium, its analysis with radiology and the study of the postcranial bones did not provide any explanations of direct pathology referring to systemic disease or injury for having performed the symbolic trepanation in front of the bregma. On the basis of the objects found in the grave it was impossible to prove that the person in question would have belonged to a social layer of prominence. The actual reason for the symbolic trepanation has not been discovered yet. In this respect the opinions of other authors relying on more sources are discussed concerning the reason of the operation (medical treatment, religious or ritual reasons, etc.) and also the possible method of its performance. The fact when the symbolic and real trepanations can be found together on the same cranium requires a special explanation. According to the existing findings symbolic trepanations have proved to be earlier in all cases. Dr. Jenő Czigány: Daten zur symbolischen Schädeltrepanation Der Verfasser setzt sich detailliert mit jenem Fund auseinander, welcher auf dem aus dem 10-11. Jahrhundert, aus der Arpadenzeit, stammenden Friedhof in Lébény-Kaszásdomb, im Grab 17m2, entdeckt wurde, wobei man auf den Schädel einer etwa 18-20 Jahre alten Frau mit symbolischer Trepanation stieß. Auf demselben Friedhof fand man im Grab 44 bereits vorher den Schädel einer Frau mit einer wirklichen Schädeltrepanation. Die detaillierte anthropologische Untersuchung des Schädels sowie die radiologische Analyse, das Studium der postkranialen Knochen ergab keinerlei unmittelbare pathologische, auf eine Systemkrankheit, Verletzung hinweisende Erklärung als Begründung für die Durchführung der vor dem Bregma angesetzten symbolischen Schädeltrepanation. Ebenso war aufgrund der im Grab entdeckten sonstigen Funde nicht nachweisbar, dass die betroffene Person einer herausragenden gesellschaftlichen Schicht angehört hätte. Der tatsächliche Grund für die symbolische Trepanation ist bis heute unbekannt. In dieser Hinsicht erläutern mehrere Autoren ihre Meinung hinischtlich umfassenderer Stoffe, nicht nur im Bezug auf den Grund des Eingriffes (Heilzwecke, religiöse, rituelle Gründe, etc.), sondern auch bezüglich der möglichen Art der Ausführung. Einer gesonderten Erklärung bedarf auch die Tatsache, dass, findet man am selben Schädel die symbolische und die wirkliche Trepanation, sich den bisherigen Funden zufolge die symbolische Schädeltrepanation immer als die früheren Ursprunges erwies. 62
