László Tuba: The History of the Press in Moson County (1848-1945) The first periodical in Moson County was launched during the revolution of 1848. The periodical was entitled Der Emacipierte Sa tanas and its 12 issue was published in German. The first weekly - Magyar-Óvár és Vidéke (Magyar-Óvár and Its Neighbourhood) - in Hungarian and German was published in 1887. After a year it was followed by a new weekly entitled The Journal of Moson County (Moson megyei Lapok) .In the last decade of the 19th century after many attempts to start papers in Hungarian and German, The News of Magyaróvár (Magyaróvári Hírlap) existed for a longer period following its launch in 1903. This paper - with it new title Moson County (Moson vármegye) was taken over by Andor Ruff, a professional journalist in 1908, and it was edited by him at a level of good quality until the end of World War II. In 1918-19 new papers were launched (Lajta Neighourhood [Lajta Vidéke], Brighter Future [Szebb jövő], Die Schönere Zukunft), and after the fall of the Hungarian Soviet Republic in the 1920's three weekly journals were published in Magyaróvár (Moson County, Der Heideboden, Western News [Nyugati Hírlap]), however, these came to an end in a few years except for Moson County. The well-known professors of the Academy of Agriculture in Magyaróvár did not create scientific institutes only but launched scientific and practical journals of high level also, for example, The Practical Agronomist (A Gyakorlati Mezőgazda; 1874-1887), Agricultural 187
