Ilon Gábor - Farkas Csilla: Houses of the Late-Lengyel Culture Settlement at the Confines of Szombathely Building construction works of METRO Holding Hungary Kft.'s store were started on 11th August 2000. The area is situated at the junction of the Main road 87th leading to Kőszeg and the ringroad by-passing the city, on one of the terraces of the stream Gyöngyös. The terrace is slightly sloping both to the direction of the town and the stream Gyöngyös. The settlement presumably continues to North and East from the building site, its southern part was destroyed by a clay-mine. In the 7

f structure, that was excavated in 50%, near the western side of the former house (Figure 2.) significant quantity of adobe wall fragments and some late-Lengyel tile fragments were found. A little farther from the Eastern front of the copper age house many stone tools, shatters and splinters were found in the 32

n structure. It seems interesting, that to the west and east from the houses there could have been the clay-pit of the adobe wall (Figure 3.-4.), that was open when the house was used. Farther from the Eastern side a lot more "real" archaeological finds were detected (pots, stone tools and bones). The significance of the settlement from the copper age can only be emphasised within the frames of County Vas. There is not such a settlement or house excavated either from the late-Lengyel culture or the complete period of the copper age. 52
