The festive events of the millennium took place at the culmination of the period of the dual monarchy, during the consummation of the achievement of middle-class status and the initial crisis of liberalism in the 19* century. The social background was determined by the fact that due to the effective work of the Hungarian and immigrating foreign contractors the country's economy reached an achievement and quality never experienced till then: the development of great scale was produced by the establishment of factories in the industry, the start of the machine-production of large scale industry, imported high technology, the increase of the level of mechanised agriculture. Urbanisation started developing and infrastructure was also improved. A fever of enterprise and establishing productive plants took shape in almost all fields in the country. The citizens had self-confidence, the general feeling was dominated by positive attitudes towards life. The municipal borough of Győr started its development as an industrial city during this period: with the development of manufacturing industry, the increase of pig export and the investments of this market. Besides the industrial plant in Győrsziget new industrial districts developed in Ferencváros, Gyárváros and Nádorváros. The Hungarian Carriage, Wagon and Machine Works was established in the year of the millennium. An up-to-date 287
