TANULMÁNYOK - KÖZLEMÉNYEK IMRE PAJER: The Press of Rábaköz (1889-1917) The press of Rábaköz evolved in two towns of the area, Csorna and Kapuvár, in the last decade of the 19 century when the conditions met the requirements of publishing their own weekly journal. A new intellectual staff (churchmen, teachers, lawyers, doctors, economists, engineers and civil servants) gathered together by that time and apart from their jobs they took the responsibility of making the newspaper as well as riporting regularly. Besides the intellectual forces the local printing offices took a large part in the making. In 25 December 1889 the first pages of the weekly newspaper, "Rábaköz", were published. Whereas the papers of "Sopronvármegye" which transformed from the "Rábaköz" was the last local paper in the period. Altogether 9 different newspapers were published for longer or shorter times in this area between 1889 and 6* Mayl917. At the turn of the century the making of local papers were either showing deficits or were converted into capitalistic businesses

. The "Rábaközi Közlöny" was an example to the latter. However, the area of Rábaköz proved to be too small for this new type of newspaper-making ang in order to have a larger market the paper was transformed to "Sopronvármegye" and was moved to Sopron.
