ARRABONA 37.1999. TANULMÁNYOK - KÖZLEMÉNYEK PÉTER DOMINKOVITS: The "French Invasion" in Győr County The Memoirs of Antal Czinege, Domanial Director of Szentmárton, 1809 The 1809-French invasion in West Transdanubia which was one of the consequences of the Napoleonic war made determinant memories in the local population independently of social and legal status. Thus, not only the supreme command, the subaltern officersand the insurgent nobility wrote about the military events and the French invasion in their diaries or in their later memoirs. The nobility, the bourgeisie, the churchmen as well as the monastic orders, moreover, the peasants who were able to read and write put on record what had been seen. The memoirs of Antal Czinege belong to the latter sources. The iron handed director of the Benedictine domain, Szentmárton, wrote them down a generation after the events. The contents begin a day before the battle of Kismegyer (14* June 1809) and discuss the events concerning the county, even so more the Benedictine domain. Czinege's own point of view is absolutely enforced in them. In the text the contemporary reality is mixed up with a couple of rumours and false news which could have been issued during the French military expedition, in fact, as a subsequent layer, the folklorization of the events inevitably appears. Those events are seen from below, from the viewpoint of a manager, Czinege, so his memoirs are especially important in studying the life of the domain of Szentmárton during the French military expedition, showing damages of soldiers and of serfs. The source-material appears with a short introduction aiming to describe the special economic situation of Győr county during the occupation as well as some events such as the spontaneous manifestations of peasant discontentment and the summary of damages which are mentioned in the memoirs. 198
