Kiss Ákos: A soproni egykori Orsolya-rendi iskolaépület alatti császárkori épületmaradványok

The whole building connected by its situation closely with the town wall-fortress system of Municipium Scrabantia, is bound up with the development of the town structure in the 1st century. To the South of the building, wall ruins from the Middle Age are assumed to be parts of a 13th to 14th centuries building. A burnt rampart stood here, too; the grated wooden beam structure being well known since the last century proved to be originating from the early Middle Age. The mosaic remains with their black and white plant designs - hedera - can be dated back to the turning point of the 2nd to 3rd centuries, with respect to the mosaic remains at Pannonhalma. Among the so-called small findings, great amounts of grey and reddish house pottery were observed after the second half of the 1st century. Even early pieces of orange colour can be found and findings from the 2nd century are abundant. From the turning point of the 1st to 2nd centuries, pottery with tooth scratched decoration occurs. Rubbed bowls already have the style of 2nd to 3rd centuries but those from the 3rd to 4th centuries are quite common. Remains of Terra sigillata are only of the type Drag. 37 - from Leseaux and from Rheinzabern. The bluish-white glass bowl can be dated back to the 2nd century and there is a glass fragment made in Aquileia. Numerous fragments of glass windows are found. Marked bricks were found in 16 varieties {Leg L Adi, the mark "P F" means terminus post quern from the years 100-114), but 2 pieces with mark Leg X G and one piece with mark Leg XIV G are among them, too. The mark "C F R I" refers to a cohors and traces from civil workshop were found at this place. Solidity and strength of the building is demonstrated by the fact that upon its walls other buildings have been constructed in later centuries, lastly between 1860 and 1870, so basically determining the development of the town. Cylindrical columns of the hypocaustum show their origin to be from the first period of the 1st century. Another dating after the beginning of the 2nd century is possible from the marked bricks of the main period. Levels are nearly at the same height of passenger walkways from the Middle Age, to a depth of 2.8 m under the present square. The building has been demolished over the cellar level of today nearly to the height of the ground walkway of the cellar. This may have occurred at the time of the building of the Ursule (in Hungarian: Orsolya) House between 1864 and 1877. The frigidarium of the bath has a dimension of 5.5x9 meters, the tepidarium beside it is 9x10 meters. Ákos Kiss 48
