Enzsöl Imre–Lővei Pál: A magyaróvári volt uradalmi malom és sörgyár építéstörténete az írott adatok és a helyszíni kutatás alapján

The history of the old manorial mill in Magyaróvár based on written matriais and local research In Magyaróvár, close to the castle, a manorial mill was established over both sides of the Lajta river. This mill is of Middle-age origin, however after research in 1990 no Middle aged parts were found. (This occasion was not followed by any archeological research.) The oldest part of the complex, which stood until the 20th century, was pulled down in 1962-63. Only its building name plate from the beginning of the 17th century and the foundation stone from the rebuilding in 1730 remained and were placed into the local museum. The plans of the castle building and fortifications from the Turkish times, and also some phases of its realization were preserved in several city building plans from the 1617th centuries. The earliest, made in 1530, now kept in the Stockholm museum of military archives, has already indicated the buildings of the mill on both sides of the river. The symmetrically hexagonal fortification plan shown on the drawing is the earliest of the renaissance regular fortification plans known in Hungary. (The planned works were only partly finished while the building operations followed, differently planned, later on.) Between 1648 and 1671, at the time of Miklós (II.) Draskovich, who became a country senechal, the mill was modernised. After the start of the Turkish wars around 1663 the castle was reconstructed, too. The building of the three-story granary, which is today the oldest standing part of the complex, can be related to this previously mentioned building works. On bricks originating from its walls Nicholaus Draskovich's monograms 'ND' can be seen. According to our research this is the oldest and biggest remaining farm-building in Hungary. Others of a similar age can only be found outwith the today's country: e.g. the granary of the Batthyány family at Rohonc (Rechnitz) in Burgenland from 1672. The earliest layer of mortar on the walls, with ashlar pattern at the corners, has been found recently. Most of the small, stone-framed windows are still in their original places. In 1710 a brewery was established close to the mill. On the site of the mill buildings on both sides of the river an impressive block of buildings was built in the second half of the 1840s. joining over the river also at a height of several floors. In 1883 new levels were put up on top of the old one and new machines were installed. Most of the machines installed in 1911, a year of re-modernization, were running for more than 70 years, that is till the closing down of the mill in 1989 - and some of them are still in their original place.
