tions, the conclusion of the war and the democratic transformation of the country. Also the German-speaking proletariat of both cities took an active part in these struggles. The Great October Socialist Révolution had a revolutionizing impact on the working-class of both cities. After the bourgeois democratic revolution of 31 October 1918 the Communist Party in Hungary came to being. Not only factory councils were estabbshed in our cities, but one of the largest factories came actually under the leadership of the proletariat. Even before the proclamation of the Hungarian Soviet Republic it was essentially rallied for the goals of the Communist Party in Hungary. The proclamation of the dictatorship of the proletariat was greeted with enthusiasm by the workers of both cities. Besides executing the orders of the Revolutionary Governing Council faithfully, the local leaders of the working-class were active in the tasks of the Socialist transformation and establishing the machinery of the proletarian state, leading the struggle for the cultural revolution, the organization of the army, the food supplies for the capital, and the accomplishment of the various tasks in other fields as well. The elections for the Soviets and the first free 1 May became large-scale political demonstrations in support of the proletarian dictatorship. The workers of both cities were also later unflinching in their adherence to the Hungarian Soviet Republic, strengthened by the Soviet and Party meetings held regularly by the local leaders. They were especially active in securing the support and guaranteeing the rights of the German-speaking population. So the German-speaking people of the two cities has stuck to the Soviet Republic staunchly till the end. On the 3rd August 1919 the Socialist —Communist Party summoned the delegates of its organizations to a county party congress to Magyaróvár. The party congress, reviewing the accomplished work, has expressed its adherence to the principles of Communism, the dictatorship of the proletariat and proletarian internationalism. On the same day a far-resounding political manifestation of the working-class gave evidence of the fact that the Soviet Republic has been its own instrument of power. Therefore the counter-revolutionary regime, led by their hatred, hastened to square its accounts not only with the local leaders of the workers but also with the simple working people after the fall of the Hungarian Soviet Republic.
