L. Timaffy: The Technique of the Ásvány Gold-chimers

6. At home the cleansing was continued with the help of quicksilver (amalgam technique). Through a linen bag they pressed mercury on the matter and moulded it well, then they washed off the remaining sand and mud by spraying of water in a plate. Afterwards they put it in a linen bag again and squeezed out the quicksilver too. 7. The remaining quicksilver was burnt out over a fire in a burning pan. The people of Ásvány call the washed gold „mud-gold", since it is gained from pay dirt and mud. They chinined 0,5—2 g gold out of 2—3 m 3 of pay gravel in a day. They earned just their day's wage. Gold-chimming came to an end by the impact of the regulation of riverways. The increased speed of the water does not allow the gold to settle down in a large measure, while the remaining quantity may be reached only at low water, sinking below the medium level. So gold-washing became a temporary occupation, till it died out together with the old people. L. Timaffy 188
