Alba Regia XXXII, 2003 ESZTER HARSÁNYI - ZSÓFIA KUROVSZKY THEORETICAL RECONSTRUCTION OF A ROOM FROM THE 3 RD CENTURY A.D., EXCAVATED IN GORSIUM, BASED ON INFORMATION GATHERED DURING THE EXCAVATION AND THE RESTORING PROCESS OF THE WALL-PAINTING FRAGMENTS (PRELIMINARY REPORT) At the excavation site of Gorsium, northeast of the Templum Provinciáé (Lower Pannónia), under a 4 n century layer, ruins of an approximately 15x10 Roman feet (444x283 cm) size room were discovered in 1993. 1 (Fig. 1.) The function of the room, beautifully painted presumably at the beginning of the 3 rd century, is yet unknown. The excavation and the systematic lifting out of the rich wall-painting finding were completed in 1994. Search of the area next to the room, where further fragments of the wall-painting may be hidden, is still to be performed. RESULTS OF THE EXCAVATION Excavation observations suggest 2 that the room is located in the northwest corner of a not completely uncovered building. Its walls, made of sun-dried clay brick, and its roof structure, together with the wallpaintings decorating the room, have fallen to ruins most probably during the barbarian attack 3 , that reached the inner parts of Pannónia as well, in 259-60 A.D. Parts of its basementwalls made of stone have remained at certain parts at a significant height of 50-60 cm. (Plate V., Fig. 2.) Its only entrance was located at the southern side. The eastern side of the doorway still exists, but the entrancewidth is unknown. 1 Head of the excavation was Prof. Dr. J. Fitz, the uplifting of the wall-painting fragments and the excavation of the room were managed by G. Nádorfí. 2 The photographs of the excavation and the information on results of the excavation were provided to the authors by Gabriella Nádorfi. 3 Fitz 1990, 44-Ф5 The terrazzo pavement of the room, with the exception of the south-eastern corner that has been destroyed by a digging in after the Roman period, has stayed relatively complete. Indications of wall heating have not been found, but it could have had floor heating. This question may be answered only after the excavation of the area adjacent to the room because of the nearly intact terrazzo floor. The fragmented, but continuous surfaces of the dadopainting have been discovered on the remaining basementwalls, which, after protection, have been covered with earth. During the excavation of the wall-painting fragments in the layer from the 3 rd century, where fragments formed a homogeneous debris with building waste, and were tumbling over one another, a system could be determined between the neighbouring and the nearby fragments. As a result of the systematic uplifting of the layers lying on top of one another, a rather large surface of a wall could already be restitute during the excavation. 4 (Plate V., Fig. 3.) For different reasons, the processing and systemizing of this significant finding of wall-painting have been discontinued. 4 The systemising of the fragments was started by G. Nádorfi, M. Flatsker, V. Nagy and О. Lakk. 41
