the Flavian period and probably also to the beginning of the 2nd century . (9) The final glazed vessel only survived in part (fig, 2/294,1). It seems most likely that this is part of a jug. It was found in a grave dating from the second half of the ist century, or the beginning, possibly even the first half, of the 2nd Century. (l(,) The fabric (gray (D 90) colour, very soft (Mohs' hardness 1), inclusions visible only frequentintense and very fina mica), suggests that it is probably not a product of Poetovio. The glaze has an uneven colour, which shades from light-brownish-olive/lightbrownish-yellow (E 74/H 88) to dark brown (H 52). With the exception of the last example, the glazed vessels from the western cemetery at Poetovio have been considered local products, on the basis of their fabrics: these, based on observation with the naked eye and with the aid of a magnifying glass (madnifying to the power of 10), completely match the fabric caracteristic of Poetovio products. However, the present conclusions need to be checked by petrological and possibly also by chemical analyses. The present state of research shows that the production of glazed pottery in Poetovio (11) started at the beginning of the 2nd Century, or possibly even in the Flavian period. Later manufacture of glazed pottery at Poetovio is indicated by products with the stamps of Poetovio craftsmen: VRSV(I), (OFFICINA) IVSTINIANI. (10 ' Grave 294 is dated by a goblet, which in turn is dated on the basis of the cemetery concerned. (11) I. M i к 1.
