CLAUDIUS POMPEIANUS GENER MARCI For dating the career of Pertinax the following sentence in uita Pertinacis has been frequently used : et postea per Claudium Pompeianum generum Marci, quasi adiutor eius futurus uexillis regendis adscitus est (SHA, v. Pert. 2, 4). According to the text Claudius Pompeianus has been already the son-in-law of Marcus Aurelius when he invited Pertinax to join him in the campaign against the Marcomans. So their co-operation began after the marriage of Pompeianus and Lucilla celebrated about the middle of 169, i. e. not earlier than the second half or the end of that year. This argumentation can be found in recent literature in the papers P. Helvius Pertinax und M. Valerius Maximianus (Alföldy 1974, 203) by G. A 1 f о 1 d y and Prosopographia Dacica (Balla 1979) by L. В a 11 a. A. R. В i r 1 e у also dealt with the cited passage (1968, 221), but did not find it proper for drawing the above conclusion. If we examine all the passages of História Augusta where the name of Claudius Pompeianus occurs, we must agree with A. R. В i r 1 e у : v. Marci 20, 6: ... filiam suam non decurso luctus tempore grand(d)euo equitis Romani filio Claudio Pompeiano dedit genere Antioc{h)ensi nee satis nobili. v. Avid. Cass. Avid. Cass. 11, 8: (in a letter of Marcus) Pompeianum nostrum. v. Avid. Cass. 12, 2: ... habetis igitur, p. с pro gratulatione uictoriae generum meum consulem. Pompeianum, dico, cuius aetas olim remuneranda fuerat consulatu, nisi uiri fortes interuenissent, quitus reddi debuit, quod a re p. debebatur. v. Pert. Did. When mentioning Claudius Pompeianus the authors of História Augusta considered it always necessary to refer to his relations with Marcus Aurelius, in order to distinguish him from other known persons called Claudius Pompeianus. However, this means that we cannot attribute any dating function to the cited passage of uita Pertinacis, the words gener Marci being not more than they are elsewhere: a constant attribute of Pompeianus. /.
