On the other hand, from the time several decades later, from the Early Roman period, we know of a number of circular dwellings of the Germanic population^ 0 ). kSuch dwellings are even depicted on a relief on the column of Marcus Aurelius in Rome. However, structures of circular ground plan cannot be entirely excluded from the milieu of the La Tène culture. The present author has already drawn attention to the graves of circular groundplan from the region of the tumuli culture, which was the „fatherland" of the Celtes. In the Middle La Tène period too, we find some circular ditches around rich graves. Uninterrupted and continuous development and long survival of some concepts in the conservative sphere of religion may also be expected for the structures of ritual and religious character. Given the present state of knowledge, the octagonal structure at the Tfisov oppidum, which is undoubtedly of sacred character, and which is the first of its kind in Central Europe, may be interprated as one of the first development phases of the later „classic" temples of the Gallic type, whose monumental form is found in the western part of the Celtic cultural sphere in the Roman period.
