73 Fig. 2. Jug ornamented with medallions, found at Orange. (After J. Déchelette.) Fig. 3. Bungled vessel from a poterry, found at Trinquetaille. (After Gallia 2. 1944.) 16 RGK II. 1909. 8. 3. 17 Germania Romana 2 V. Pl. XXVII, fig. 7, p. 19. is a bungled ware, having one medallion on both sides each. The reliefs of the disks represent a fight of gladiators or a chariot race respectively, completed by legends. The diameter of the disks is 9 cm. The material of the vessel gives a metallic impression, so this specimen is imitating bronze vessels, too. The jug is dated to the second half of the third century. The fourth vessel with a medallion application, presented in a sketch, is a so-called Faltenbächer." (Fig. 4.) The disks applied on the vessel form, extending and favoured all over the empire, give a somevhat uinorganic impression. The one-eared, red-varnished Faltenkrug was found at Nimwegen. Fig. 4. Faltenbächer with medallion applications, found at Nimwegen. (Germ. Rom. 2. V.) One of the three medallions represents a victorious quadriga driver, bearing the legend CALOS VENETE beside the portrait; 17 this scene records the victory of the „blues", the Veneta fractia. On the second disk a running dog, on the third a running deer is depicted. These two animal portraits are related to the animal figure seen on the negative seal, derived from the Pannonian pottery of Brigetio. On the basis) of J. Déchelette's collection we may state that the known disks used as medallion applicationis were produced in the various workshops of Gallia and Germania in a similar execution 18 and with almost identical patterns:. — Scenes of war and mythology with legends, sometimes animal portraits, 19 18 J.
