M. Šašel Kos: The gooddess Aecorna in Emona

Abb. 1 defined either as North-Adriatic or as pre-Celtic, but certainly not Illyrian, since this term, if applied in an ethnic sense, can be only (approximatively) valid for the peoples living in southern Dalmatia.15 To locate the tribe of the Catari in this region - as does A. Mócsy on the basis of Pliny’s geographically imprecise observation (NH 3, 147)16 - can only be regarded as an hypothesis for which no conclusive proof is available. According to Katicic, the North-Adriatic onomastic system would have included the Libumi, the Histri, the Veneti, and the Ig population.171 would regard this as linguistic proof that the pre-Roman and pre-Celtic population in the region of Ljubljana would have been strongly influenced by the Venetic peoples, or could have even been considered a branch of the Veneti. Historically it would be plausible to assume that a deity which was important at the time of the Roman domination, though only very locally, would have originally been worshipped by the local population. The Ig and Smarata inscriptions, on which almost exclusively epichoric names are attested, would be interesting in this respect. However, apart from a dedication to Jupiter from Ig,18 only tombstones have come to light in both mentioned areas; there are no testimonies for any local cults, although these must have certainly existed. This phenomenon can be explained either by the fact that their cult places have not yet (15) See R.
