The buildings under survey date from ancient to the most recent times. The centrally located county often lay in the path of advancing armies; it was repeatedly devastated, yet it always recovered and new, important buildings sprang up within its borders. Today it is home to the most extensive ensemble of Roman remains on Hungarian soil, Gorsium; the finest Neo-Classical churches and country houses, Csákvár, Dég and Seregélyes; and some of the most magnificent parks, Alcsút and Martonvásár. The Communist model city, Dunaújváros - originally called Sztálinváros - was also built here in the 1950s. The reappraisal of its Socialist realist architecture is under way. Beside these great monuments of national importance the county abounds in less glamorous, but charming and interesting towns and buildings, such as 18th century market towns - Mór and Bodajk -, country churches, houses of the lesser nobility, wine press houses and wine cellars. The historic monuments of the county are presented in an easily managable yet systematic fashion. The settlements are arranged alphabetically and each monument represents a separate entry. The book is based on on-the-spot survey and current research. The most important monuments are illustrated with drawings and photographs made specially for the book. An English-language summary and a glossary make it accessible to non-Hungarian readers. DUNAI
