The altaipiece, together with the Annunciation, adorned the Chapel of St. Michael created for Pope Pius V, in the Torre Pia of the I 'atican Palace. In 1847 it was donated to the church of Santa Caterina in Livorno. Until 2008 it was the only painting known to survive from the pope's private chapel, which had probably been renovated shortly before the altarpiece was sent to Livorno.
