MIHÁLY ANDÓ: THE FLOOD CONTROL SYSTEM OF SZEGED The River Tisza is the “main Street” of the city of Szeged, the shape of which was previously determined by the most expensive constructive projects of the reconstruction works following the flood of 1879, the River Wall of Szeged. The parapet-wall protection system that was designed under the leadership of Lajos Lechner and Aurél Wein and built between 1880 and 1886, with the renovation of its slipping that occurred at some parts, had protected the city for long decades. After the flood on the Tisza of 1970 a decision was made on a city and a national level on the renovation and development of the river wall that was realised in three stages. The rebuilding of the retaining wall between the ex-railway bridge and the southern end of the Lajos Tisza boulevard constituted the first stage. During the reconstruction works the retaining brick-wall was pulled down and at the building of the new retaining wall they used ferroconcrete stripping blocks, which are at the same time the visible surface of the protecting structure. Following the building of the river works the building of the first stage practically started in 1974 and was inaugurated in 1979- In the second and third stages a ferroconcrete nail retaining wall was placed on the one-time earth-dike south to the Lajos Tisza boulevard. 40.
