Painter Béla Endre's contacts in Makó

The two-decade-long relationship between painter Béla Endre (1870-1928) and Makó’s art-loving citizens was decisive for the rather reserved artist’s oeuvre, who was also spectacularly reluctant to make public appearances. The author introduces this kind of relation from the aspects of exhibition history, the history of art collections and of patronage, taking new aspects into account.

In his study the author writes about the legacy of János Espersit's work on the patronage of art, the exhibitions and introductions organized in Makó, as well as about the passion of photographer Béla Endre and his role in the setting up of the Majolika Yard in Hódmezővásárhely. During the painter’s exhibitions in Hódmezővásárhely, Makó and Orosháza, local citizens and intellectuals bought the works. The author shows where the works purchased ended up along with the patrons. The study describes the artistic and economic links between the two cities, Hódmezővásárhely and Makó, and the network of artistic and economic relationships between the two world wars.
