APJOK VIVIEN A marosi gyógyiszap útja The Journey of the Healing mud in the River Maros From sand mining to bath culture The location of the town of Makó by the River Maros is not only a geographic but also social determinant in the emergence of the settlement. Due to the favourable natural conditions, the settlers on this territory of the Southern Great Plain found both protection and exploitable economic opportunities - resulting in the onion cultivation that made Makó famous. The Makó part of the River Maros has had many „classic" economic activities attached to it, like obtaining water, river transport and freight transport, as well as sand mining, the history of which was investigated by historian Ferenc Tóth in the 20th century. In recent years, however, new research „trends" and approaches to ethnography have also emerged, enabling the topics that have previously been discussed to be illuminated, the same phenomenon can bring new results for local history and ethnography from another point of view. This is due to the fact that Ferenc Toth's 20th century research - though from another point of view - can be continued in the 21st century as well. The social and cultural aspects of the River Maros can be examined, so the study presents a form of the social and cultural role of the river outlining the historical and economical background in the interpretation of the recreational function of the river and of the thermal bath. 453
