Harvester Wheatsheaf , New York Perspectives in Museum Representation of Youth Group Cultures by LÁSZLÓ MÓD In the past few decades an ever growing demand has been noticed for documenting present day material culture in museums. As a result new perspectives have opened up for museum collections, at the same time generating new tasks for the institutions. Through the example of the Koszta József Museum of Szentes, present paper intends to interpret the conclusions and experiences of two temporal exhibitions displaying a special set of objects and documents. The two exhibitions here serve as examples to consider questions arisen by the representation and integration of present day material culture. These questions are to be discussed from point of view of ethnographical museology in the future. Referring to the concept of musealisation, present paper analyses the possibilities of documenting youth subcultures in a museum. In course of the research, interviews made with the collector, as well as newspaper articles presenting the exhibitions and reflections written in the museum guest book are studied; this way helping the scholar to grasp the motivations and visitors' interpretations. The very fact that the articles and documents were put on display in a museum in a temporal exhibition entitled "Szentes Underground - Youth Subcultures of a Small Town in the 1990s" influenced the referential meaning of the articles and documents. A local youth association organized a several day long program series including concerts, book presentations and meetings with the audience. Another temporary exhibition of the museum entitled "Tolerated, Supported, Prohibited - The history of Hungarian Rock Music on LP Covers" introduced the visitor with the most significant phases of the history of Hungarian rock music represented on LP covers. Besides general rock history, the exhibition focused on the relation between power and music, also suggested by the title. The three category represented by the letter T in the Hungarian title ("Tűrt, Támogatott, Tiltott" - "Tolerated, Supported, Prohibited) determined cultural life, as well as LP producing in the period of the communist regime in Hungary. The three letters refer to the fact, that some pieces of art and productions were supported to appear in front of the audience, while others were prohibited. LPs, cassettes and CDs produced and marketed as mass products have their special content of meaning, being connected to individual life histories. Getting hold of private collections of the kind may gain significance in the future, since these articles and documents represent the identity and lifestyle of youth subcultures.
