CATACOMB GRA VES IN THE STEPPES OF THE LOWER DON IN THE LATE ROM/AN AGE Sergei Ivanovich BEZUGLOV This work is a short cnlhiral-chronological survey of die Late Sarmatian catacomb graves in die Lower Don basin. Such constructions appear in this region in the 2nd-lst cent. B.C. In the lst-beginning of die 2nd cent A.D. they are unknown, later, in the early phase of the Late Sarmatian period (middle of the 2ndmiddle of the 3rd cent. A.D.) there are single cases, and in the late phase of the period (3rd^4th cent A.D.) we experience their mass spread. To-date more than 80 kurgans containing catacombs have been investigated in the Don basin They are concentrated between rivers Don and Sal. Sometimes such kurgans form cemeteries. From typological point of view the catacombs of the Lower Don form two groups. In the first group the shaft and the chamber is situated on the same long axis, in the second one they form a right or obtuse angle. The orientation of die shafts is stabile —N-S (sometimes with differences), the situation of the chambers is more diversified. Among the features of die burial rite we have to mention the custom of placing sacrificial meat, incense cups (kurilnica) into the grave, the tradition of the deformation of die sculls. On the basis of die grave articles found in the catacombs of the Lower Don we can divide them into two groups. The first Сергей Иванович Безуглов 344044 Ростов-на-Дону ул. Погодина 20/43, кв. 12. Россия one (middle of the 3rd-first third of the 4th cent. A.D.) is characterized by two-piece bow fibulae and small profiled fibulae (in one case a Chemiakhov type fibula with inverted foot was found), light clay „Tanais" amphorae, faceted metal belt sets, finds made in cloisonné technique, polychromie jewels made in „camelian" style, gray ceramics of the Central North Caucasus. The second chronological group (second half-end of the 4th cent. A.D.) is determiiied by Cherniakhov type fibulae with inverted foot, Bügelknopffibeln, buckles with massive frames, finds of the Cherniakhov culture (ceramics, bone combs), large amber beads, a glass beaker. On the basis of several features these burials can be connected with die analogous graves of die Central North Caucasus and Stavropol region. In historical-chronological aspect the catacombs of the Lower Don (especially that of the second chronological group) can be well associated wiüi the Tanait Alans of Ammianus Marcellinus, who wrote that Üiey were nomadic people, the eastern neighbours of the Ostrogoths. Around 370-375 they were suppressed by the Huns and became the part of the Hun coalition. The western imports of both of die groups can be considered as an evidence of direct contacts between the nomads and the population of the Gothic „Hermanarich's state".
