The constructions started in 1714, as a result of which the Eugenios moat enlarged the area of the downtown (Palánk) to the west. There was a ban on building in the northern part of the fortified territory. With minor modifications the 18

th century structure of the downtown was kept until the early 20

h century, when the construction of the university clinics and the Cathedral began. The last fortification constructions ended in the middle of the 1770s. By the time it was finished it had already turned unnecessary. On the basis of contemporary drawings present study intends to reconstruct the centre of the town, the castle and its surroundings. 54
