PÉTER SZERDAHELYI CINEMAS IN SZEGED BETWEEN THE TWO WORLD WARS The Szeged Belvárosi Cinema has a remarkable history in a number of respects. It was built in 1920 right after the defeat in World War I. In the time of inflation and disintegration of historical Hungary, the largest cinema of the countryside and the fourth cinema in Szeged was built on the expenses of local entrepreneurs. Since its foundation it has been the leading cinema of the town. The first talking film presented in Szeged was screened here in June 1930. One of the major stakeholders, the owner of the wood-mill, the brick-works and the mill, Imre Lippai sponsored Hungarian film industry at the end of the 1930s. In 1943 when a record number of 53 Hungarian films were shot, the Belvárosi Cinema screened 22 of them. Five movies had their premiere in Szeged. The cinema was designed to be suitable for other productions as well. Béla Bartók gave a concert here and in the 1930s the stars of the Szeged Open-air Theatre performed here also. 390
