SLPOS József: A 48-as Kisgazda-, Földmives és Polgári Párt megalakulása
JÓZSEF SIPOS FOUNDATION OF THE 48 SMALLHOLDERS' PARTY The 48 Smallholders' Party was founded on 11 April 1922 by roughly ten members of the contemporary Parliament. These agrarian democratic representatives were not satisfied with the program of the Unified Party led by István Bethlen and István Nagyatádi Szabó. The new, oppositional party proclaimed radical economic, social and political goals. These were pointing to the formation of a democratic political system. Among the goals one could find radical and democratic land reform, progressive taxation of land owners and the wealthy. To raise the economic, social, educational, cultural and health standard of the poor was also among their aims. They demanded the widening of democratic political rights, such as general and secret ballot, freedom of the press and of assembly, communal and municipal reforms. Poor peasantry was the social basis of this party. 146
