GÁBOR VINCZE PROCEEDINGS AGAINST CLERICS IN THE BEKÉS-BANÁT REFORMED DIOCESE (1945-1948) Hungarian scholarship has not yet studied the persecutions against the historical Churches in the short democratic period between 1945 and 1948. Numerous studies and textbooks claim that in Hungary persecutions started from 1948. The study discusses the persecutions in the Békés-Bánát Reformed Diocese. In several places the communist dominated police arrested pastors, cantors and teachers of religion without sentence and kept them in prison for months. Others were slandered by the so-called vindicatory committee - mostly with invented causes. Others were brought to trial. The study presents several cases when Reformed pastors were brought to and condemned by the people's tribunals. The exact number of the slandered clerics in the diocese is unknown. In the whole Reformed Church District of Tiszántúl 20 % of the clerics were slandered, jailed, convicted or interned from the end of 1944 to the middle of 1947.
