ISTVÁN ZOMBORI BEQUEST OF DR. LÁSZLÓ GOTTWALD IN THE MÓRA FERENC MUSEUM 300 YEARS OF A CIVIC FAMILY Dr. László Gottwald (1904-1987) was a highly respected internal speciahst of the town. A man of great erudition, he was not only an eminent practitioner but also a scientist publishing several medical studies. Besides he owned a library with some thousand volumes and had a collection of quality paintings. The German ancestors of Gottwald came to the country as servicemen of the field-kitchen with the armies recapturing Buda in 1686. Originally the family settled in Buda. Later one branch moved to Pécska (Pecica, today Romania), while the other one, dealing with catering, stayed in Buda. This family branch ran a restaurant and made their wine in the mountains. László Gottwald was born in Miskolc in 1904. He started his career at the University Hospital in Szeged, and then from 1934 he opened his private practise. He was serving at the Russian front for years during World War II. In course of his life Gottwald collected several documents, valuable photos and other relevant sources in connection with his family. Following Gottwald' s last will the valuable material owned by the family was donated to the museum in 2008.
