st November 1865. However, it is unknown how many private users of the service of the Gas Lightning Company of Szeged had. According to a prior agreement with the owner of the gas company, L. A. Riedinger (Augsburg), a price reduction could be applied in case the number of users reached a certain amount. The city councü claimed to reach this limit already at the beginning of the 1870s and registered all the users and the amount of gas they used to prove this claim. The gas company did not accept this register and provided another list according to its records. Present study introduces and compares the two lists. Occupation of the users and the place of gas usage are listed in the records of the gas company. Although the users are registered only by street names (the house numbers are not given), we could outline the structure of Szeged inner city from before the great flood of 1879 with the help of this list. This territory was called Palánk. The streets where private gas users lived were almost the same where water supply system was working. Nonetheless, there were far more streets with gas lightning. The larger part of gas users were merchants, but the number of private users was also high.
