NAGYGYÖRGY Zoltán: Kárász Benjamin – a hazafi

ZOLTÁN NAGYGYÖRGY BENJAMIN KÁRÁSZ - THE PATRIOT One of the outstanding figures of the 1848-49 Hungarian revolution and war of independence was Benjamin Kárász of Horgos and Szentpéter (1792-1874), Hungarian nobleman, Lord Lieutenant of Csongrád county and landowner of the Chamber in Horgos. He was born and died in Szeged, nonetheless he was buried in Horgos, in the family crypt in the church of Our Lady of the Snow. He had his family house, the Kárász mansion inherited from his grandfather (Miklós Kárász II county recorder, the founder of Horgos) in Szeged Palánk, demolished, and in 1845 he had built in its place the impressing and monumental palace in classicist style, still seen today. He was government commissioner of the South during the 1848-49 Hungarian revolution. Benjamin Kárász received in his house Governor Kossuth, who gave his last speech in the territory of Hungary from the balcony of the Kárász palace. In honour of the Kárász family, streets were named in Horgos, Szeged and Szeghalom.
