11 Végül is — megfelelő források hiányában — nehéz megválaszolni a cikk elején említett második kérdést: hogyan kerülhettek Makay egyes könyvei a Tanodái Könyvtárba, majd később a múzeumba. Az is talány maradt, vajon hol rejteztek 1860-ban azok a Makay könyvek, például a Tudománytár kötetei, amelyek nem szerepelnek az árverési jegyzőkönyvben, mégis ugyanazt az utat járták be, mint társaik: a Tanodái Könyvtárba, majd a városi múzeumba kerültek. Talán még mint világi tanfelügyelő ajándékozhatta jóval az árverés előtt a csongrádi iskolának? Nem tudhatjuk, de hogy jó helyre kerültek, az kétségtelen. Makay László és könyveinek sorsa szemléletesen bizonyítja, hogy egy vidéki kis mezővárosban is, mint Csongrád, Malakulhatott igényes értelmiségi lét, tudásés könyvtisztelet, még ha ezt intrikák, gáncsoskodások vagy éppen egy nehezen bizonyítható vád vették körül. PÉTER ERDÉLYI THE UNUSUAL FATE OF THE TOWN CLERK OF CSONGRÁD LÁSZLÓ MAKAY, AND HIS LIBRARY, IN THE MID-19TH CENTURY This article examines the career of the Town Clerk of Csongrád, László Makay (1811-1867), his contacts, and the fate of his library. As a young man, failing to complete his law studies in Budapest but standing at the threshold of a promising career, he was a clerk and proof-reader for the Hungarian Scientific Association, and would later become an associate worker on the editorial staff of the Athenaeum and the Pesti Hírlap. In this way, he came into contact with the elite of contemporary intellectual and literary life (István Széchenyi, József Bajza and Miklós Jósika). Following a scandalous election he became Town Clerk of Csongrád from 1843 until 1847, and was subsequently suspected of embezzling a considerable sum while leader of the orphan's fund of the town. However, although the embezzlement could not be proven, much of the moveable and immovable property of László Makay was subsequently sold at auction. Among this property was his library, comprising almost 50 volumes. Records of the auction — those which remain — list the books by their titles, their estimated values and the purchasers' names. The author analyses this valuable data. In addition to fiction, the library of László Makay contained a large number of books concerning legal science, politics and history, as well as other subjects representing Hungarian publications in the first half of the 19th century, and illustrate the fact that a high standard of intellectual appreciation, knowledge and respect for literature were to be found, even in such a small provincial town. 11 DUDÁS L.: i.m. 167. o.
