KOVÁCS Lajos: A szegvári Falumúzeum létrejötte
At first, the museum was open to visitors every day. It was open throughout the autumn, and into the start of winter. It was only closed owing to the extremely cold weather at the time, and it remained closed until the following spring. Together with carrying out his work at the museum, Museum Director János Jaksa also taught at the local elementary school, and continued with the work of the collection. The number of objects acquired grew still greater, and soon the former Civic Society building which had been donated by the local Village Council proved to be too small to house them. A new building had to be found, because the number of exhibition rooms was inadequate and the storage rooms were also filled to capacity. In 1969 the Directorate of the County's Museums, together with the County Council, purchased the Bailiff s House located at Hunyadi utca 31-33, which had been built in the 1740's, as the new premises for the Szegvár Village Museum. After a long period of assiduous work and great patience, the new Village Museum was finally inaugurated on September 30, 1973, forming a part of the opening event of Museum and Monument Month. Thus the collection of great quantity and value was finally placed in a worthy location. The then retired János Jaksa continued his work with enthusiasm, as his great dream had finally come true with the establishment of the new Museum. Following the change of regime, the Local Government named a street after him. His life, so rich in events and results, ended in 1981.
