ANDRÁS LENGYEL THE HABILITATION OF BÉLA BENCSIK AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SZEGED The essay reveals the history of the habilitation of philosopher Béla Bencsik as private instructor in Szeged, based on university documents. In the appendix it lists the themes of the planned lectures of Bencsik, as well as the so-called opinion based report about Bencsik by professor József Halasy-Nagy, his habilitator. The story and documents of the habilitation are interesting beyond their direct relevance to the history of the university, since they contribute to our knowledge about the philosopher who has been completely forgotten today. The topic becomes even more intriguing, since Bencsik - faced by his own talent - became highly compromised politically as a friend of the Nazis toward the end of his short life. The combination of the weight of his intellect and his political derailment, however, requires further analysis.
