The first benevolent society in Hungary was established much later - in 1918, in the central house of the professed sisters in Budapest. It came to Szeged in 1920, and found home in the Benevolent House operated by the professed sisters in Móraváros (Berlini Blvd. 11.) The founding regulation defined the goal of the organisation as the care, and the bodily and spiritual support of the poor, especially the impoverished sick. Only women could become full pledged members of the society. At the beginning, the members of the organisation in Szeged came from all parts of the city, and extended their activities over the entire area of Szeged. After the foundation of the New Szeged (1926) and Somogytelep (1937) societies, the range of its activities was somewhat narrowed, and became focused mainly on the vicinity of the parish of Móraváros. However, they still participated in the support of the poor of Petőfitelep and aided the local branch organisation there as well. The members of the organisation carried out an extensive range of spiritual activities and charity: agape and aid connected to church holidays, agape and aid not related to church holidays, and special aid formed the various activities of the group. The basis for the various deeds of charity was established from creative events Qiterary nights, mass entertainment, tea afternoons), self-sacrificing work (work afternoons, collections) and personal financial contributions.
