Foote - Attila Tóth - Anett D. Árvay This paper examines the history of Hungary's political monuments and historical shrines since the fall of the communist government in 1989. Popular attention has focused on the removal of overtly political monuments, but new shrines have been created and forgotten memorials restored. Unlike earlier episodes of political iconoclasm, decisions about contested places are being made by local authorities and private citizens, rather than by a central government. The result has been a sometimes subtle rearrangement of public memorials and shrines to inscribe new interpretations of the national past on landscape.
