Magvető A down-to-earth painter-poet The life-work of Demeter János Lóránt Pál Szuromi Demeter János Lóránt is one of the most genuine representatives of contemporary Hungarian painting. He was still a quite young man when he established a typically concise, monochromatic and lyrical tone of mastery, and he modified his style only in the second half of the eighties. Since that time, his pictorial art has been colorful, full of vigor and irony. The present study sets out to explore the three and a half decades of this artistic career. Biographical moments flare up in his art while he also gets down to elaborating thematic and aesthetic analyses of the major works. He wonders what kinds of relationships are hidden between personal qualities and the developments in artistic mastery. Also, he seeks to identify a system represented in thematic and formal changes of the pictures. The analyses reveal the important role of the austere and industrial environment (that of Salgótarján) in the formation of Lóránt's style. It is also important to point out the great Hungarian masters that he started off to follow (Egry, István Nagy, Berény, László Mednyánszky). His true virtue is his ability to adjust those pictorial traditions to his personality. He has managed to remain laconic and puritan while at the same time maintaining a lyrical sensitivity.
