FISCHL In 2009, a cycle path was built between Csongrád and Felgyő by the Csongrád Micro-Region Company. Salvage excavations were conducted in several locations along the planned line of the cycle path in 2008 and 2009. The planned line ran across the archaeological site of Felgyő, Ürmös-tanya, where an excavation was conducted between March 24 and April 17, 2009. The planned line of the cycle path ran along the western side of the road to Szeged (Map 1). The trenches opened by Gyula László between 1960 and 1977 lay on the other side of the road with the exception of a single 10 m by 1 m trial trench, whose exact location can no longer be identified. The site extended for some 225 m along the 4 m wide planned line of the cycle path. Altogether 81 features were uncovered over the 898 nf large investigated area: in addition to settlement features of the Bronze Age and Árpádian Age, four inurned Bronze Age burials and six Avar graves were also uncovered (Map 2). Two barely prominent, north-west to south-east oriented ridges extend across the area. The Bronze Age burials lay in the deeper area between the two ridges (Map 3), while the Bronze Age settlement features on the northern ridge. The Árpádian Age settlement features dug into the sub-humus were brought to light on the southern ridge and its northern and southern slope. Underlying the Árpádian Age occupation layer on the ridge and its southern slope was a 60-70 cm thick layer of sand, under which lay the Avar graves (Map 4). The documentation was performed according to stratigraphic units, while the numbering of the features conformed to the practice on previous excavations. The location and nature of the Bronze Age and Avar graves can be fitted into the general pattern of the cemeteries excavated earlier by Gyula László.
