From the 19th century, the town provided a livelihood for a portion of the rural population; women were also able to acquire a job in varying numbers based on their social status and their various group norms. The new circumstances required new strategies which affected the traditional image of family and the place, role of the men and women in it. The role of the church in whicj they "explained” the events of the world began to wane as well and with the removal of individuals from the community, its function of providing and enforcing norms also ceased. The churches took measures against "modern” morals and lifestyle which

directly contradicted their teaching in many instances. In their answers, they presented such values that returned to the traditional role of men and women and focused on family and religiosity. However this endeavor could only become successful via indoctrination, so they put great emphasis on the moral education of children and youngsters. In my study I examine the "ideal” image of a catholic adult between the two world wars using the novels and publications for children and teenagers. In addition, I shall present this using a concrete example, the activities of the Heart Guard of Szeged-Rókus.
