Anikó Nagyillés Glässer Illness and Death in the Apostleship of Prayer Illness and Death in the Apostleship of Prayer Anikó Nagyillés Glässer In my study I examine how the children of the Apostleship of Prayer handled situations of crisis, such as illness or death. The official standpoint of the Church was prevalent in the answers of the teachers, adjusted to the situation at hand. People of the Middle Age and the Early New Age imagined their world to be a part of creation, resting in the "protective arm of God Almighty". This belief can be observed in the case of the religious child organization as well. Their tutors considered it important to prepare children for death, because in case of a contingent death, they wanted to prepare the achievement of a "good death” (not a sudden one, achieved by taking the sacraments). On one hand, this met with the concepts of society (mostly the peasantry) regarding death, and reflected the viewpoint of the Catholic Church as well. In albums made by the leaders of the Szeged-Rókus Elementary School's Apostleship of Prayer there are several stories revolving around the death of a small child, i.e.: "their meeting with Little Jesus". Therefore, preparing children was not only a part of religious education, but an answer to a particular social issue. 333
