Bátyai Gitta The Wagner Bath A Wagner-fürdő Gitta Bátyai In the beginning of the 1800s', the culture of bath- goingwasalmostnon-existentin Szeged. The populace bathed in the river Tisza wherever they could. The Council made a decision: a public bath shall be built. The public steam bath, which was under constant improvement and modernization by its new owners, was established in 1843. By 1880 it has become unworthy of Szeged. Hódmezővásárhely and even Szabadka has fairy palaces in comparison by this time. This was followed by the establishment of the Wagner bath by Mrs. Vargurga Wagner Réthli, equipped with every sort of comfort. In 1912, since its upkeep was no longer economic, the owner offered it to the Town. The bath, which had been closed down in 1941, was bought by DMKE and the buyers built 3 five-story building at its place. 268
