Konstantin Medgyesi The democracy-interpretations of István Bibó during the Coalition Years The democracy-interpretations of István Bibó du­ring the Coalition Years Konstantin Medgyesi The article of István Bibó titled The crisis of Hungarian democracy is not only a substantively pronounced source of democracy discourse during the Coalition Years (1945-1948] but a determinative document as well in terms of its antecedents and UTÓÉLET. The publications of Bibó during the Coalitions Years are generating debates even to this day, some uncertain ele­ments of Bibo's thinking are still unraveled. In his publications from the Coalition Years, István Bibó was wrong of several fronts regarding the dictatorial behavior of communists. During our analysis of the texts we failed to find a quote from Bibó from the Coalition Years where he would have clarified the level of danger that communists presented to the emerging constitutional democracy. During the Coalition Years Bibó believed that Hungarian society must be changed in a radical manner, a social revolution is required. This was the most important element of the history philosopher's post 1945 mentality; even more important than the idea of civic democracy. In his political publications during the Coalition Years, Bibó was hoping for the establishment of a consensual democracy, but he was will­ing for turn a blind eye over the grievances of constitutional democracy, for he believed that a social revolution may necessitate the tempo­rary restriction of democratic rights 264
