Zsolt Máté Turkish cemetery of Szeged in the age of Ottoman rule Turkish cemetery of Szeged in the age of Ottoman rule Zsolt Máté There are some cut views and some short notes only about the Turkish cemeteries of the 150 year period when the Hungarian Kingdom was under Ottoman-Turkish rule. In case of Szeged there is no mention except some words of Bél Mátyás from 1732 saying that bey Hobiart was buried at the Upper Town [Fölsőváros) of Szeged and a mausoleum was erected above his tomb. The next is an anecdote from the time of the Great Flood of 1879. In a memory of Tápay- Szabó László it is written that Turkish coffins were floated then from the Turkish cemetery from the vicinity of their house. As almost the whole of the topography of Szeged was washed away by the Flood it was not able to identify the adequate location of this house but with the help of georferred historic maps elaborated during the works of Szeged Atlas. So it is found finally a very possible site of the cemetery shown on the old map from the year of 1776 as a wall-fenced large plot - unusually with no inscription. It can be watched near to the traditional Hobiart street and Hobiart district written on the map of 1814. Today a large housing estate is erected there with a street and a small park. 169
